Chris O’Neill, a stroke survivor and volunteer coordinator, has been recognised as the Peter Shave Volunteer of the Year 2023 for his incredible efforts coordinating the Different Strokes group in York. Chris’s dedication to organising activities, events, and support for stroke survivors has made a profound impact on their lives, creating a supportive community where they can recover and thrive.

When asked about his volunteer role, Chris shared that his own experience with brain haemorrhages in 2016 and 2019 motivated him to focus on his own recovery both physically and psychologically. In 2020, his wife discovered the Different Strokes group in York, which provided invaluable peer support and they went along. Of this experience he shared: “ I hadn’t been in a great place after my stroke but by 2020 I was ready to get out a little more. I went along to the York group. I found it helpful talking to people who had been though similar experiences. We had all been through a lot and everyone’s experience was different. Some had fared better and others worse – it helped me to gain clarity on my own situation.”

Then the pandemic hit. Throughout the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the group adapted by organising Zoom meetings and later transitioning to outdoor activities as lockdown restrictions eased. Despite the initial caution the group continues to meet, allowing stroke survivors to connect, support each other and regain a sense of normality.

In early 2021, the previous coordinator and founding member John decided to step down. Chris, knowing he couldn’t approach the role half-heartedly, stepped up to take on the responsibility. Using his skills and experience gained during his career as a partner in an architects firm, Chris has taken proactive measures to secure funding for the group, exploring grants and fundraising opportunities. The success of these bids brings in much-needed financial support. He has introduced structured activities like yoga and fitness sessions, providing stroke survivors with a combination of physical exercise and meaningful conversations. He also organises outings and social events, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging among the group members.

One memorable event that exemplifies the impact of Chris’s work was a forest bike ride. One member who had never thought he would ride a bike again joined the group for a ride on adapted cycles. He says of this moment: “As I watched this member pedal around the forest with pure exhilaration and joy on his face, doing something he had never thought would be possible again – something clicked! It was like mission accomplished – everything was worth it! I get a huge amount of personal reward from knowing I have helped someone to move forward in their life. Having been in dark places myself, I know how hard it is to come back from.”

In light of his contributions, Chris has been awarded the Peter Shave Volunteer of the Year Award 2023. When asked about this recognition, Chris expressed that it came very out of the blue and he was very surprised to be nominated, let alone win. Chris expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Lesley, who has been a pillar of support and actively involved in the group, particularly as Chris is unable to drive. He acknowledged the invaluable assistance of Andrew, Roy, Martin, and other group members who have provided significant help and support throughout their journeys together. He also extended his thanks to John, who initially started the group and continues to be an active member.

He emphasised the importance of acceptance and holistic support, acknowledging that stroke recovery encompasses both physical and psychological aspects and that he works to help survivors with both aspects of recovery.

Remarkably, Chris recently secured a substantial grant of £20,000 from Hiscox Insurance York branch. This generous grant will play a pivotal role in ensuring the continuity of unique and impactful support for working-age stroke survivors in the York area. The grant from Hiscox Insurance represents a significant milestone in Chris’s tireless efforts to make a lasting difference in the lives of stroke survivors, and it underscores the recognition of his invaluable work within the community.

Looking ahead, Chris plans to continue expanding the group’s reach by partnering with local NHS services and engaging social prescribers to refer individuals to the peer support group. He aims to raise awareness and increase membership. He will continue organising enjoyable outings and events, such as a boat trip coming up and a summer picnic at a surprise location.

Caroline Saunders, Different Strokes Volunteer & Group Coordinator said:

Chris O’Neill’s journey from stroke survivor to Volunteer of the Year is a testament to the power of empathy and compassion. His unwavering dedication to running the peer support group for working-age stroke survivors in York has touched the lives of countless individuals, offering them a lifeline of understanding and hope. Chris’s personal experience fuels his ability to connect with others on a profound level.

We are inspired by his commitment to making a difference in the lives of stroke survivors, and his recognition as Volunteer of the Year is well-deserved. We celebrate Chris not only for his exceptional coordination of the peer support group but also for his tireless efforts in making the group activities accessible and affordable for survivors and their families. His passion and drive have truly elevated the quality of life for stroke survivors in York. Chris is a shining example of the positive impact one individual can make, and we are honoured to have him as part of our team at Different Strokes.”
