World Stroke Day 2022

The number of young people having strokes is rising, but people still believe it only happens to the elderly!

Despite being one of the leading cause of death and disability in the UK awareness of stroke in people under 65 remains dangerously low.

World Stroke Day is on  Saturday 29th October and we need your help!  We would like to come together as a community of younger stroke survivors and raise awareness that stroke can happen at any age.

We would love for you to get involved in any of the activities listed below, from sharing your story to sharing our posts on social media – no contribution is too small!

Social Media
We are always looking for stroke survivors who are willing to share their stories. You can either do this by contacting us directly at info@differentstrokes.co.uk
or you can get involved by sharing your story on October 29th on any social media platform using the hashtag #NotJustTheElderly.  We will be sharing these on our platforms all day!

If you would rather share your story on a bigger scale could you contact your local radio and newspapers and ask them to feature your ‘survivor story’ for World Stroke Day?

Events
Alongside other stroke organisations we will be attending UCL World Stroke Day Forum in London on Friday 28th October – an annual forum designed to bring together stroke survivors, carers, researchers, clinicians, and charities all focused on improving stroke research and rehabilitation.

Donate or fundraise

We have ambitious plans for 2023 and beyond:

  • To be known in every stroke ward in the country, and to ensure that no younger stroke survivor goes home without support.
  • To expand our Different Strokes team of volunteer ambassadors who will represent stroke survivors in all regions of England via the newly created Integrated Stroke Delivery Networks (ISDNs).
  • To amplify the voice of younger stroke survivors, with the aim of raising awareness to the “84% of people who still believe strokes only happen to the elderly”.
