Mark's Story: stroke aged 37 whilst working as a stroke nurse in 2020
Mark from Salisbury had a stroke in his sleep in November 2020. His stroke impacted his right side and his speech – he is now living with aphasia and oral apraxia. Due to his experience as a stroke nurse, Mark knew he knew he was having a stroke but couldn’t communicate this. Initially, they suspected Mark had Bell’s Palsy but an MRI confirmed he had suffered a stroke, and further tests established this was due to a hole in his heart (PFO). He discusses how eye-opening it was to suddenly be a patient, his recovery, and how his stroke has affected his mental health.
