On Sunday (20/03), our BASS (Black & Asian Stroke Survivor) Project Officer, Rahael Kuruvilla, spoke at St Thomas Jacobite church in Romford to raise awareness on stroke risk in Asian communities on how to spot the warning signs of stroke. After her talk Rahael connected with many NHS nurses and survivors who are part of the church on the vital need to raise awareness of younger stroke.
Our current work on the BASS project has shown us how important it is to raise awareness of the higher stroke risk Black and Asian people face at a younger age and to enhance our support services to Black and Asian survivors.
Our initial work in this area has shown us that Black and Asian people face five barriers with stroke:
As a charity we are working to break down these barriers and provide support services and our first step to this is by connecting with religious & community organisations such as St Thomas Jacobite Church. In the coming months Rahael will continue to work on raising awareness of stroke risk in Black and Asian communities.
