We are delighted to announce Caroline George as our Peter Shave Volunteer of the Year 2024!
Caroline serves as the Coordinator of our London East group alongside her brother Steve, and her dedication is truly inspiring. The group was founded in 1997 by Steve, who experienced his first stroke at the age of 17 in 1984 and has since battled multiple health issues, including brain tumours and epilepsy. Steve and Caroline’s mum Anita was a big part of the group and her passion as a mother and volunteer was also inspirational. She sadly passed away in 2015, Caroline shares: ‘They have both been amazing examples of care and compassion with their voluntary work for Different Strokes. It really has been a family effort!’
It’s worth noting that Steve himself won this award in 2013 in honour of Peter Shave, a longstanding Different Strokes volunteer who passed away in 2012. The award recognises individuals who exemplify Peter’s unwavering commitment to the charity and the stroke community as a whole. This award is particularly meaningful to Steve and Caroline as they both knew Peter.
The weekly meetings in Ilford have become a vital support network for fellow stroke survivors and their families in the local community. For 17 years, Steve led the group with the unwavering support of his family. In 2014, Caroline stepped up to take the reins when due to Steve’s health he could no longer do as much as he would like to. Despite the challenges he faces, Steve’s passion for stroke rehabilitation and care remains undiminished.
Caroline’s tireless efforts have ensured the group’s continuity. She has not only kept things running smoothly but also found innovative ways to raise funds, making group activities accessible to all. Her compassionate leadership shines through, reflecting her commitment to carrying forward her brother’s vision. Caroline’s dedication to members’ well-being ensures that families like hers receive the vital support they need.

The George family has been part of Different Strokes since our inception in 1996, and their London East group stands as one of our longest-running and most resilient. We are so grateful to Caroline for all she has done and continues to do for the stroke community.”
