Introducing Ruth

Meet Ruth - Our Carlisle Group Exercise Instructor

Meet Ruth, an ARNI instructor who leads the exercise sessions at our recently reopened Carlisle Group. The group meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 1.00pm at The Sands Centre in Carlisle.

Ruth has been a Personal Trainer since 2016 having previously worked as a music teacher, musician, artist and writer. Having always been interested in fitness and exercise it was a natural progression for Ruth to become formally qualified as a PT. In January 2022, Ruth was contacted by Dr Tom Balchin who asked Ruth if she would consider training to become an ARNI instructor. The ARNI Institute (Action for Rehabilitation from Neurological Injury) offer a ‘Functional Rehabilitation & Exercise Training after Stroke’ Qualification.

The opportunity felt personal for Ruth, as her family has been affected by strokes, her uncle had a stroke a few years ago and her mother has had several TIA’s. Understanding the impact that strokes can have, Ruth wanted to be as useful as possible to as many people as possible. She wanted to understand more about stroke and what happens in the brain and by extension in the body. To know how it impacts those who survive it and of course how she, as a personal trainer, can best help stroke survivors.  To communicate and give time to people who need it. People could share their thoughts. So that they better understand themselves and convey their requests to people. They also did not always try to put on the mask of a strong person and also aroused compassion for themselves. What will help them later in life. To learn more visit the website

When Ruth first qualified as a teacher in 1997 she lived in Tindale Fell before moving to London in 2003 where she married and had three children who are now in their teens.  Ruth has recently returned to Carlisle and is very excited about working with our Different Strokes Carlisle Group.  Ruth says “The people I’ve met so far have been very friendly and have made me feel welcome. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone over the coming months and hope to facilitate activities that meet individuals’ needs.”

If you are a stroke survivor in the Carlisle area come along and try our Exercise and Peer Support Group.  You will be met by a friendly face and be made very welcome. If you are unsure about getting involved in the exercise session, there is a social meeting at 2.00 pm open to partners, carers as well as stroke survivors.
