What is aphasia?
Aphasia is a communication disability caused by damage to the communication centres of the brain. It is most commonly caused by stroke, but it can also happen after a brain haemorrhage, head injury or brain tumour.
Everyone experiences aphasia differently. It can affect speaking, reading, writing and using numbers. Some people may struggle to find the right words. Others may not be able to speak at all.
Aphasia can affect confidence, relationships, work, education and social life. Because many people have never heard of aphasia, it can also feel isolating.
Our Speakers
Our speakers are Colin Lyall and Hanka Mayhew from Say Aphasia.
Colin founded Say Aphasia after having a stroke in 2013 at the age of 50. His stroke caused aphasia.
Three years later, he started the charity and created a support group in his local area.
Through his own experience, Colin understands the challenges aphasia can bring and the importance of support and understanding.
Hanka was a teacher of English for foreign students and a translator before her stroke.
Aphasia changed her life and career. Today, 11 years later, she is an ambassador for Say Aphasia. She is also a befriending volunteer, patient educator and active supporter of aphasia research.
Hanka regularly speaks about aphasia and the need for greater awareness.
During the webinar, Colin and Hanka will share their experiences of living with aphasia, the work of Say Aphasia and why raising awareness matters.
