Meet our Volunteers

Lisa’s life changed dramatically on May 7th, 2017, when she suffered an ischemic stroke at the age of 44. Initially dismissed as a migraine, her stroke was eventually confirmed after persistence and an eventual scan. Since then, Lisa has faced numerous challenges, including chronic pain, neuro fatigue, and a later diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers–Danlos syndrome. Despite the setbacks, she remains focused on moving forward, learning to adapt, and finding ways to stay positive.

Lisa was the first member of the Different Strokes Whitstable support group and found immense value in connecting with others who truly understood her experiences. Inspired by the support she received, Lisa is now taking on the role of Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Ashford, Kent group. She hopes to create a welcoming space for other survivors to share their stories and find support. Lisa is passionate about helping others rebuild their lives after a stroke, just as she has.

Jackie – Volunteer

Jackie became a full-time carer for her husband Brian after he suffered a major stroke in 2016, leaving him with right-side paralysis and aphasia. For many years, Jackie juggled caring for him at home and managing his growing health needs. As Brian’s needs changed, he moved into a nursing home, where Jackie continued to visit him daily and advocate for his care until he sadly passed away in 2025.

Jackie understands the demands of caregiving, the challenges that stroke can bring, and the importance of having a supportive community. That’s why she’s volunteering for the Ashford, Kent, support group. Drawing on her experiences as a carer, Jackie is keen to support others facing similar challenges, offering both practical advice and an empathetic ear. She values the opportunity to help people navigate their own journeys while staying connected with her local community.

If you are interested in joining the group as a member or as a volunteer, please get in touch using the details below.
