Building Community: A Look Back at Our 2024 Stroke Events

We are thrilled to reflect on the resounding success of our recent “Living Beyond Stroke: Community and Connection” events held in Sheffield, Slough, and Birmingham. Each event was an incredible opportunity to bring together stroke survivors, their loved ones, and professionals from across the UK, creating a space where stories could be shared, experiences understood, and a strong sense of community built.

These events featured inspiring keynote speakers who captured the essence of what it means to live beyond stroke.

Anthony Bryan, who spoke in Sheffield, shared his powerful journey of overcoming physical challenges to break a Guinness World Record. Emily White in Slough highlighted her experience of surviving a stroke at just 22 years old, and Ingrid Ash in Birmingham spoke passionately about her life-changing experience and her commitment to helping other survivors through her work with Different Strokes.

Their stories reminded us all that, while life after stroke brings unique challenges, it can also open up new possibilities for connection and personal growth.

But what truly made these days special was the interaction between the stroke survivors themselves. As Different Strokes CEO Austin Willett said, “The most powerful part of these events is seeing stroke survivors talking to each other, sharing their stories, and realising they are not alone in their experiences. Watching these conversations unfold, hearing people offer each other advice and support, and witnessing the genuine bonds that form between individuals who have walked similar paths—those moments are what make these events truly unforgettable.”

Austin went on to thank our event sponsors, saying, “We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors—Ipsen, Bolt Burdon Kemp, and Irwin Mitchell—whose support made these events possible. Their commitment to our cause allows us to provide a platform where stroke survivors can come together, share their stories, and build meaningful connections. It’s with their help that we’re able to create these impactful days that make such a difference to so many lives.”

This season of events has been nothing short of amazing, bringing energy, conversation, and hope to all those who made time to join us from across the UK.

The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how much they valued the opportunity to meet others who truly understand what it’s like to live with the effects of a stroke.

As we look back with pride on this year’s events, we are already filled with excitement for what’s to come, and we look forward to seeing even more of you next year!
