Thanks to funding from Sovereign Health Care, our first Regional Coordinator Geoff Render was appointed in May 2016. Geoff is a younger stroke survivor himself and he works one day a week establishing new support and exercise groups in the West Yorkshire area. The aim of our groups is to help younger stroke survivors and their families to reclaim their lives. Geoff has also worked tirelessly to raise the profile of Different Strokes and younger stroke across the county of West Yorkshire.
We recently caught up with Geoff to find out how he is getting on:
The group has many exciting ideas for 2018 and a Christmas meal planned, so I really recommend younger stroke survivors and their families in the Leeds area make sure they visit it. You can find details of their meetings HERE
“In Bradford we have established a new group, which although in infancy is growing slowly but surely. I have been in regular contact with various local organisations and attended events such as ‘Inspiring Bradford’ in October, where I raised awareness of younger stroke and my role to local schools. The next step is to get younger stroke survivors and their families attending and to find a volunteer in the Bradford area to help manage this group and to take them forward. You can find details of the group HERE. If you would like to get involved and live in the Bradford area then please email us HERE
We also have a brand-new group in the Kirklees area who held their first meeting on November 15th in Dewsbury. Sue Lerums has stepped forward as a volunteer to run this group and is doing a fantastic job! You can find details of our Kirklees group HERE .
I am also supporting some interest we have had in establishing a Skipton group so keep an eye out for more information in the future! Overall It has been fantastic experience working with fellow stroke survivors to provide support after a stroke and to increase awareness using my own experiences to help others. My hope for the future is that we can obtain funding to continue this work in West Yorkshire for years to come”
