Mr & Mrs Whittle celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in July 2017 and rather than asking their guests for gifts they requested they make a donation to Different Strokes instead.
Mr and Mrs Whittle’s nephew Peter, had a stroke at a young age and was heavily involved in Different Strokes, first as a member and then later as a volunteer for many years. Sadly, Peter passed away in 2012 but his legacy lives on. Every year we hold the ‘Peter Shave Volunteer of The Year Award’ in which one of our volunteers is nominated and wins this honour in Peter’s name.
The Whittle’s and their kind guests raised an amazing £700, which will pay for seed funding for 2 new Different Strokes Exercise and Support groups to be established. Thank you to Mr & Mrs Whittle for thinking of Different Strokes and to their guests for this generous donation.
Then, on Saturday 29th July Greg Hollingworth , (who some of you may recognise) married the love of his life, Asa. The lovely couple donated to Different Strokes in place of favours for their guests.
Greg himself is a stroke survivor, who started working with Different Strokes as a volunteer and is now a member of staff working in communications. Greg also administrates our Facebook support group which you can apply to join here: www.facebook.com/groups/differentstrokesuk You can see Greg’s story here: www.differentstrokes.co.uk/stories/gregs-story
Thank you to both couples for celebrating Different Strokes at such special occaisions and making a difference to the lives of younger stroke survivors in the UK at the same time.
If you have an event coming up and would like your guests to donate to a cause close to your heart, send us a message firstname.lastname@example.org or read more here:www.differentstrokes.co.uk/fundraise/
