Different Strokes

Exercise plays a major factor in the maintaining health.  It:

  • helps to increase strength and endurance
  • increases cardiovascular (heart) and respiratory (lungs) efficiency
  • lowers blood pressure which helps to reduce the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease
  • changes body metabolism (resulting in weight loss)
  • reduces stress
  • increases self-confidence
  • improves balance and coordination

For Different Strokes members attending one of our groups, some of the most important benefits appear to be:

  • increased mobility
  • increased gait (walking) speed
  • improved balance
  • improved coordination
  • opportunities for meeting and sharing experiences with other stroke survivors which leads to improved self-confidence and lifts mood

The weekly classes also provide an important sense of routine and structure. As well as increasing opportunities for social interaction, this helps to increase independence and integration back into community life.
