Get involved with a young, vibrant, user-led organisation.
We particularly welcome applications from stroke survivors and also from those with close personal experience of stroke.
|“The Different Strokes office is the only place I go where being a stroke survivor is an advantage”
- Tom Bennett, Head Office volunteer.
Thank you to the MK community foundation for its valuable support in funding our volunteer programme in Milton Keynes.
This grant is having a positive impact on both the Different Strokes volunteers who took part, and on stroke survivors generally in the Milton Keynes area. It has increased the confidence and self-esteem of the participating stroke survivor volunteers whilst helping them to develop skills for the workplace. Our volunteer team also overlaps with the Different Strokes exercise and support group in Milton Keynes.
Our volunteers work in the office and are involved in many different tasks such as speaking to other stroke survivors on the StrokeLine and sending out information packs to families in need. They have also sent out information leaflets about Different Strokes services to GP surgeries in the Milton Keynes area and taken part in awareness raising events such as manning a stand at Milton Keynes train station on World Stroke Day (29th October) and at the Healthwatch MK event at Middleton Hall in the Central Milton Keynes shopping centre on 4th November. These events gave them an opportunity to share their personal experiences of stroke and recovery with the general public which included family members and friends of stroke survivors who had not previously heard of Different Strokes.
Oliver says “I found that the World Stroke Day information event at the Milton Keynes train station and the Healthwatch MK event have helped me to share my personal knowledge of stroke .“
